Recent updates to Glass Balustrade Regulations could impact your upcoming projects. If your building plans were approved after May 2023, it’s essential to ensure your balustrades align with the latest compliance requirements.

Understanding the New Regulations
The National Construction Code (NCC) and Australian Standard AS1288:2021 now impose stricter safety requirements for glass balustrades, particularly regarding load-bearing capacity and impact resistance. These regulations focus on structural integrity based on height and applied loads, meaning the correct system for one job may not be suitable for another.
Above 5 metres: Toughened laminated glass is required to meet the increased load and impact safety standards.
Below 5 metres: While the standard does not specify a required thickness, the recommendation is to use either a semi-frameless system or a frameless system with a capping rail using 15mm toughened glass, instead of the previously used 12mm. This recommendation is based on load force considerations rather than a strict regulatory requirement.
Semi-Frameless Glass Balustrades
For Installations Below 5 Metres:
- Glass Type: 10mm toughened glass
- Features: Durable and impact-resistant, suitable for lower-height installations.
For Installations Above 5 Metres:
- Glass Type: 11.52mm toughened laminate glass
- Features: Increased safety and load-bearing capacity for elevated areas.
Frameless Glass Balustrades
For Installations Below 5 Metres:
- Glass Type: 15mm toughened glass (recommended for better performance under load forces)
- Specifications: 21mm x 30mm rail system for added structural support
For Installations Above 5 Metres:
- Glass Type: 17.52mm toughened laminated glass
- Specifications: 21mm x 30mm rail system ensures safety and structural integrity. Laminated glass holds fragments together in case of breakage, reducing injury risks.
